Valentine’s Day Devotional: Abiding in His Love
I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. John 15:9
As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, a day dedicated to love, we are reminded of the different kinds of love that fill our lives. From agape—the unconditional, sacrificial love of God for us—to eros, the romantic love that draws us close to others, and philia, the deep affection between friends, love is a central theme in our hearts and minds. Each of these forms of love plays a significant role in shaping how we experience life and relationships. But the greatest of these loves is agape, the selfless, perfect love that Jesus has for us. In John 15:9, Jesus says, “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love.”
This verse is not just a beautiful reminder of how deeply Jesus loves us but an invitation to remain in His agape love—the love that is unchanging, sacrificial, and eternal. Let’s reflect on what it means to abide in His love, especially on a day that celebrates love in all its forms.
Agape love is the love the Father has for the Son, and it is the love Jesus has for us, a love that is given freely and without hesitation.
This is the love that we are invited to remain in. It’s a love that surpasses all other forms of love, because it is not dependent on us—it is God’s love for us, demonstrated through Christ. This agape love is secure, unwavering, and constant. It is the love that holds us close, despite our imperfections, and invites us into a deeper, more intimate relationship with God.
Valentine’s Day is often a time to reflect on romantic love, but it can also be a powerful reminder of the greatest love of all—the love of Christ. When we are rooted in His love, we are equipped to show that love to everyone around us, whether through small acts of kindness, listening ears, or simply being present for someone in need.
Prayer for today: Jesus, thank You for loving me with the perfect love of the Father. Your love is beyond measure, and I am so grateful to be the recipient of it. Help me to remain in Your love today—finding my security, identity, and purpose in You. May Your love fill my heart and overflow to everyone around me. Teach me to love others as You have loved me—sacrificially, graciously, and unconditionally. On this Valentine’s Day, I want to celebrate Your love above all, and share it with the world. In Your name, Amen.
