Under God’s Control
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Genesis 50:20
Suffering is often seen as a time of pain and difficulty, but as believers, we’re called to view it through a different lens. Merriam-Webster defines suffering as “pain” or “distress,” but this definition feels incomplete when we consider the believer’s experience. In Trusting God, Even When Life Hurts, Jerry Bridges notes that the suffering of believers is distinct because it’s anchored in the assurance that our pain is under the control of a sovereign, loving God. For Christians, this truth transforms suffering from meaningless pain into purposeful growth.
When life feels upside down, it’s easy to spiral into questions like, Why me? Why did this happen? Can this just go away, Lord? These questions, while natural, often shift our focus inward—toward our struggles and fears—instead of upward to God. Replace the why’s with statements of thanksgiving. Like, God I thank You that I still have a roof over my head, God I thank You for fresh water to drink, God I thank You that I still have a job, God I thank You that I woke up this morning, God I thank You that I’m still in my right mind, God I thank You that I am surrounded with a good support system. As you begin to replace fear with statements of thanksgiving your mood begins to shift from worry to worship and suddenly you are minded that God remains sovereign and in control.
Next time you face trials, instead of asking, Why me, God? ask, Why not me? Choose to worship instead of despair, knowing that God’s plan is bigger than our understanding. Suffering, though painful, becomes a tool for growth when we trust the God who sees the end from the beginning.
Prayer for today: God, sometimes there aren’t enough words to express how much I love You. God you’ve been good to me, even when I don’t deserve it and today I want to thank You for loving me. Amen
