True Delight
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Psalm 37:4
Every day we make time to enjoy what we delight in. If we desire to delight in a sunset, we walk outside at the close of day. If I desire to have a clean home, then we’ll make the bed, or clean the house, or do yard work. The provisions we make are the means to the end of delighting in that object. Likewise, if our delight is rightly in the Lord, then we make provision to delight in Him.
This means we set aside time to commune with Him through prayer, studying His Word, and praising His name. We study the Scriptures, commune in prayer, serve and teach in love, meditate, and praise. John Piper, preacher, and author says we glorify God ‘by’ enjoying Him forever. Therefore, in everything that we do we ought to pursue our joy in God, whether it be eating breakfast, taking a test, walking, breathing, talking, working, etc. We must have a conscious awareness of God in every activity of life, for in so doing we glorify Him; that is true delight.
Delight is not a resentful duty. This command is the difference between ‘have to’ and ‘desire to’. When we think of the word “duty” we think of an unpleasant task. Our mind turns to making up beds and washing dishes and taking out the trash and doing things for other people even when we really don’t want to. The command here to delight in the Lord is not like this. That is to find joy in all that you do. When we wash dishes, clean clothes, and make dinner, we are to do those things in the pursuit of joy in the Lord. Thus, we are to take everything captive and make it obedient to the end of enjoying God in the activity. This is how we glorify God in all things, whether we eat, sleep, or drink.
May you find the time today to delight yourself in God as you spend time in prayer even in the mundane things throughout your day. Trust in His peace that surpasses all understanding to guard your heart and mind. May this week of seeking God in prayer deepen your connection with Him and strengthen your faith. Amen.
Prayer for today: Almighty God, fill all things with Your presence. Help me to see You in everything that I do today. In Your great love, keep us near You this day. Amen.
