The Strength of God’s Name
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7
How often do we place our trust in what we know works? In the “chariots and horses” of our lives the systems, structures, and resources that are tried, tested, and trusted? The steady job, the savings account, the reliable relationships. These things are not bad in and of themselves. But like Israel, we’re called to place our trust not in our own strength, but in God’s power to deliver.
God wanted Israel to trust in him, not in their horses and chariots. When they faced their enemy on the battlefield, they were to remember how the Lord had delivered them in times past. Israel was not like the other nations of the world. Instead of putting their faith in the size of their army, they put their faith in the size of their God. Israel was to look to their covenant-keeping Creator and place their full confidence in him.
The name of the Lord represents His power, authority, and character. In David’s time, calling on the name of God meant calling on His divine ability to intervene and protect. There is power in God’s name that transcends any earthly weapon or defense. His name is a strong tower, a refuge that never fails.
Today, reflect on the strength of God’s name. When you feel weak or unsure, remember that His name carries all the weight of heaven’s authority. Trust in it as you face the challenges of your day.
Prayer for today: God, Your name is powerful and mighty. Help me to call upon Your name when I feel overwhelmed, knowing that Your strength will never fail me. I trust in the power of Your name today. And so, God, we ask you to help us to trust you fully. Help us to trust you completely. Help us to trust you wholeheartedly, even with things in our lives right now that we don’t understand why this or that is happening. God, help us to trust in you, not to put our trust in anyone or anything else. Some trust in chariots, some trust in horses. But, God, we look to you and we trust you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
