The Sound of Celebration
Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets. 2 Samuel 6:14,15
God gave David victory, and this led to a great celebration of music and dancing. ‘David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals’ (6:5). Just think back to last summer when the United States Women’s soccer team won the World Cup—what a celebration that was. Similarly, David’s victory must have been extremely noisy!
Scripture tells us David danced and worshiped God in a very demonstrative way: ‘David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the Lord with all his might … David’s wife, Michal, was embarrassed and despised him for his display of passion (verses.14,16). David pleased with the outcome of this battle, danced for God. Here, we see a biblical example of loud and uninhibited celebration. But take notice, David’s cheerfulness came from the heart and was a genuine act of celebration.
Let us recognize the move of God when we see it and feel free to worship Him in thanksgiving. We should feel free to express our worship to God as passionately as we want, not worrying about what other people might think of us.
Prayer for today: Lord, help us to recognize the sounds of heaven – the sound of worship, the sound of the Holy Spirit and the sound of celebration. Despite our distances may the churches again be filled with the sound of worship and celebration. Amen
