The Same God
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
Yesterday, we talked about building our lives on a firm foundation. Jesus reminded us that when the storms come, the house that is built on the rock will stand. But there is another reason we can build with confidence: the God we are building on today is the same God who has always been faithful. The song Same God by Elevation Worship reminds us to look back and remember who God has always been. Sometimes when we face something we’ve never experienced before, we can begin to wonder, “Will God really come through for me?” But our circumstances may be new to us—they are not new to God. The situation may be unfamiliar, but God is not unfamiliar with our situation. The challenge may be bigger than anything we’ve faced before, but it is not bigger than the God who has carried us before. God’s Word gives us this powerful reminder: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)
Throughout Scripture, we see people who had to trust God in circumstances they could not control. Noah had to build before he saw the rain.
Abraham had to leave before he knew exactly where he was going.
Moses had to stand before Pharaoh knowing that he could not deliver Israel in his own strength.
David had to face Goliath knowing that the battle could not be won by human strength alone.
The Israelites had to step toward the Red Sea before they saw a path through it.
And again and again, God proved Himself faithful. The circumstances were different. The people were different. The challenges were different, but God was the same.
Today, think about what that means. The God who was faithful yesterday is faithful today. The God who provided yesterday can provide today. The God who made a way yesterday can make a way today. The God who strengthened you yesterday can strengthen you today. The God who carried you through your last storm has not changed while you are facing this one. He is the same God.
Prayer for today: Lord Jesus, thank You that You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. When my circumstances change, remind me that You do not change. When I face something I’ve never faced before, remind me that You have never stopped being God. Thank You for every time You have made a way for me, provided for me, protected me, strengthened me, corrected me, and carried me. Help me remember Your faithfulness when I am tempted to fear the future. So today, I choose to trust You. You are the same God yesterday, today, and forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
