Singing What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to hill. Psalm 95:1-2
In a casual conversation if you were to ask someone to name their closest friend, not many would say Jesus yet He is the best friend anyone could ever ask for.
When Joseph M. Scriven penned “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” in 1855, the words flowed from his soul. That’s because not once, but twice he lost a fiancée to death shortly before they were to be married. This is a hymn that highlights the comforting and supportive relationship we have with Jesus. It reminds us of the privilege of bringing our burdens to the Lord in prayer: “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!”
Do you know Jesus that way—as a friend you can turn to and confide in? Someone who accepts you, has compassion for you and gives you wise counsel?
Singing this hymn encourages us to lean on Jesus as our friend and confidant, trusting Him with our worries and cares. It’s a reminder of the peace and comfort we find in a close relationship with Him.
Today, take some time to pray about something that has been troubling you, trusting Jesus as your friend who cares for you. Share this practice with someone who may need encouragement.
Prayer for today: Dear Jesus, thank You for being our friend and for bearing our burdens. As we sing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” help us to bring all our worries and cares to You in prayer. Thank You for the peace and comfort that come from knowing You. In Your name, Amen.
