Run to Him
Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me. Psalm 55:5
Throughout his life David faced violent and destructive forces. These forces are not isolated to biblical times, just you only have to switch on the news or read a newspaper to hear of the horrible that takes place in cities all around the world. As David faces his enemies and they continue to pursue him, it’s no surprise that David cries out in great anguish ‘Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. Can you feel that ‘Oh!’ in David’s pain? This man of God longed that he could escape the terrible situation and distressing betrayal of his beloved friend. So shocking was this soul-mate’s disloyalty that David would have fled to the desert to find solace. Can you identify with this feeling? When the weight of this world and its worries are too much to bear, I am sure we can all identify with this feeling of wanting relief.
David was in desperate need of some fresh air. David wanted to run away from his current circumstances that was causing so much pain. He wanted to flee far from the person who had caused him such anguish of heart. He wanted the horrors of life that surrounded him, at that time, to be removed far ….far….far away! But David had to learn that you can’t run away from the circumstances of life, you can’t escape from those that would do you harm. Unfortunately, or fortunately if you consider the greater work that God is doing in your life, we are not called to live in this world and be free from trials and tribulations. Why? Because we live in a fallen world where sin abounds. For this reason we are not called to run from instead we are called to run to.
We are called to run into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The only escape is to be positioned in Christ, by faith, and empowered by His Holy Spirit. The only way to be at rest is to abide in Christ and to have Him abiding in us, every moment of the day – as we walk in spirit and truth, as we trust in the Lord with all our heart (Proverbs 3:5-6).
