Raise Your Eyes

Raise Your Eyes
I will raise my eyes to the mountains; from where will my help come? Psalm 121:1
The New American Standard Bible uses the word ‘raise’ in describing the position of the eyes in Psalms 121. The Psalmist starts with ‘raised eyes’. That really is a good starting point. No matter what our circumstances are, even if they seem insurmountable and impossible, look up. ‘My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth’ (verse 2). Psalms 120 to 134 are known as songs of “ascent” or “songs to take you higher.” Makes sense this version of the Bible uses the word to describe the position where your focus should be.
If ever there was a song designed to lift us up, Psalm 121 is it. The original context was probably the pilgrim’s journey up to Jerusalem for the Feasts of the Lord: Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. The pilgrim may even have recited these songs climbing up the steps toward the temple.
So I encourage you today to read Psalm 121 and let it sink into your spirit. When we look up we recognize that our help comes only from God, who tirelessly watches over us all day and night. Lift up your eyes, cry out to Him and allow the Lord to be your keeper. He’s with you, and knows all of the circumstances that you’re facing. There’s no problem too big or too small for our amazing God.
Let’s never forget that God is by our side at all times. He watches over us and shelters us. Guarded by God himself, we find a place of peace under the canopy of his vigilant love.
