Provision vs Expectation
When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. Exodus 16:15
In Exodus 16, Moses steps in and reframes the whole moment. He tells them, “This is the bread the Lord has given you.” In other words, what you’re questioning is actually your answer. They wanted meat. God gave manna. It wasn’t what they asked for, but it was exactly what they needed. They were looking for something dramatic, something obvious, something that matched what they had in mind but God was already meeting their need in a way they didn’t expect. Likewise, God’s provision is often different than our expectations. It doesn’t come packaged as we’d hope; sometimes it’s smaller than we imagined, slower than we desired, and if we’re honest, even the color is off! But, even in these moments, it does not mean that God is not in the midst.
Today, be encouraged to keep using your spiritual eyes. What you’re confused about is actually your provision. And that’s what makes this so powerful it wasn’t what they asked for, but it was exactly what they needed. They wanted meat, certainty, comfort… but God gave them daily sustenance, daily dependence, daily reminders that He was still with them. Every morning they had to wake up and gather it. Every morning they had to trust Him again. It wasn’t excess, it was enough. It wasn’t flashy but it was faithful. God may not send what you wanted, but He will send what you need. And it didn’t look like much, but it kept them alive. Don’t despise small provision, it might be the very thing sustaining you.
Prayer for today: God, help me trust that Your provision is enough, even when it looks different. You are not just the God who brings us out, but the God who sustains us along the way. Thank You that even when we don’t recognize it, You are providing. Forgive us for those moments we doubt or question Your hand. Amen
