Pestilence
You will not be afraid of the pestilence that stalks in darkness. Psalm 91:6
Prior to the year 2020, the word epidemic meant nothing to us. Now, the word “pestilence” immediately evokes a threatening and ominous picture of a fatal epidemic. Yet this is the word the psalmist uses to describe human fear. Since God does not waste words, He must have a specific reason for repeating the promise ‘Do not fear’. God knew the pestilence (disease) and the fear that would be running rampant as long as sin remains in the world. The world is teeming with fatal epidemics that are hitting people by the thousands, so God catches our attention by repeating this promise. It’s as though God is saying, “Did you hear me? I said it in verse three, but did you really hear Me? Well just to be sure, I am saying it again in verse six—DO NOT be afraid of the pestilence!”
God’s Word does not promise invincibility, instead, it promises His presence. Throughout the entire Bible, we are reminded that a sovereign God is in control. He offers not only His divine presence, but things like wisdom, human medicine, and other mundane means of assistance.
Our inheritance is not limited to what is handed down to us genetically from our ancestors. Our inheritance can be what Jesus provided for us if we believe the Word and put it to work.
The enemy may try to cause sudden surprises to catch us unaware and knock us down, but God is faithful. His Word is true no matter what the circumstances look like. For this reason, He tells us not to fear pestilence.
Likewise, believers, today can trust the Lord and need not fear deadly disease; they should also avail themselves of medical help and practice healthy habits.
Prayer for today: Thank you, Lord that I do not have to be afraid of pestilence because Your blood flows through me. By His stripes I know that I can be healed. I have received your inheritance as my own. I choose to put my trust in Your Word as I dwell in the secret place. In the name of Jesus. Amen
