Our Provider
And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”. Genesis 22:14
We are familiar with the story of the birth in a manger of Jesus, the son of God and how this event fulfills many prophecies from the Old Testament. Yet we are maybe less familiar with the relationship between the names of God and his prophecies such as the name Jehovah Jireh, which means God will provide.
Just as God provided for Abraham in today’s passage, He also provided for Joseph and Mary. Of course Joseph, Mary and Jesus would have made it to Egypt, because God was with them and provided for them. Without Jehovah Jireh’s involvement in the holy family, the covenants made by God and his chosen leaders (Abraham, David, Moses, etc.…) would not have been completed in the life, ministry, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus resulting in us still under the law and without the salvation we receive by grace through faith alone in God.
Be encouraged this morning as you consider God the provider. I cannot even begin to count the many ways that He has provided for me. While I was in sin, God provided a Lamb to save me. How is God providing for you this Christmas season? If you are unsure, ask him to show you the ways he is your Jehovah Jireh. When he does stop and offer up a prayer of thanksgiving for all that He has done and is doing in your life.
