Onesimus – From Runaway to Restored
Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever. Philemon 1:15, NIV
Onesimus was a runaway slave who likely stole from his master and fled. He was once considered “useless” (the literal meaning of his name in a negative context) by running away, Onesimus became a “useful” and trusted Christian brother to both Paul and Philemon.
In the Epistle to Philemon, we discover his transformation. He encountered Paul in prison and came to faith in Christ.
His flaw? Theft and escape.
His mess? Broken trust and a fugitive status.
Paul sends him back not as property, but as a brother.
The runaway became “useful”. Tradition suggests he later became a leader in the early church.
Can you identify with his story? I sure can. What society labeled disposable, God called redeemable. In recalling this story I am reminded of the lyrics written by Jessy Dixon
“I am redeemed, bought with a price,
Jesus has changed my whole life.
If anybody asks you, just who I am,
tell them I am redeemed”
In this Year of Purpose, your past mistakes do not cancel your future usefulness. Restoration may require returning, reconciling, and rebuilding. Grace doesn’t just save you it reshapes you.
Prayer for today: God of restoration, help me make right what I’ve made wrong. Where relationships are broken, give me courage to reconcile. Transform my failures into faithfulness. Make me useful for Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen
