Monday Morning Manna
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28
Scripture tells us that ‘And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.’ But do they? I can share with you a number of things which aren’t good. The death of a child is not good. Cancer is not good, drug addiction is not good, war is not good, wickedness is not good. Yet still God’s Word tells us to “know that all things work together for good to those that love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.” So how do we reconcile what we are going through with the instructions left for us from God?
We do this through the hand of God. God, our great physician takes things that, in and of themselves, are bad, and He puts them together, much as a chemist might take chemicals that, in and of themselves, may be deleterious and mixes them to make a medicine that brings healing.
Perhaps this greater working isn’t just tied up in verse 28, but the words spilled over into verse 29 and 30, where God tells us what his purpose is for us. “All things work together for god for those who are called according to His purpose.” What is his purpose? His purpose is that we might be conformed to the image of his Son. Our great Father works in mixing all things together so that we are conformed into an image which reflects His Son.
More and more every day, and ultimately those whom he’s called he has also justified. Those he justified he also glorified. Ultimately in heaven we will be glorified, fully conformed into the image of Jesus, and that’s what all things are working together toward. And this my brothers and sisters is the Greater Good. The good that we cannot see in the moment, but a good that shall soon be revealed.
And as you walk through your life, each of us is walking through some really difficult stuff at the moment, more challenging things than I can even begin to imagine. And I can imagine that it’s not easy. It’s hard. It’s confusing. It’s not at all what you would have designed for your life. And I just want to encourage you that, yes, there is a loving God who is watching over you and will make something good from all that you are going through.
God loves you and His love for you is greater, higher than you can imagine.
Prayer for today: Father God, thank You for the Word. Thank You for the indwelling of Your Holy Spirit within me, which continues to strengthen me. Help me to understand that You take what is foolish, despised, and the things that are not, to confound the things that are. Help me to know that You continue to work in Your ways and not mine. Let Your name be praised. Amen.
