Love is patient, Love is kind
Love is patient, love is kind… 1 Corinthians 13:4
I Corinthians 13 is the go to scripture for a most wedding ceremonies. So what does it say about love, what is love? Well first this is love is patient. If you love someone there’s going to be a time when they’re going to upset you (intentionally or unintentionally) yet, scripture says we ought to be patient with the person. We can feel really upset at them. But the mark of true love is to be really patient with the person who irritates you the most. Why? Because patient love covers over a multitude of ‘irritations and annoyances’.
Love is kind. Love sees a need and without being asked, moves into fix it. Godly love doesn’t just sit back and suffer. It does something about it. Godly love reaches out to the person who’s hurting us and says. “What can I do to help?” This is how God loves us. He sees us in our mess then rescues us showing us kindness and forgiveness. This kind of love transforms people’s lives.
Love is humble. When we love the way we should, we have to think about how we say things, so that our words bring life and not harm to the other person. Humility is an important part of our love relationship with God and others. Pride is a big issue for many of us. It often brings about misunderstandings and arguments. Pride prevents intimacy, as it conceals the true self in fear of being ‘uncovered’ for who we truly are.
1 John 1:7 says ‘If we walk in the light, He is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another’. Light always reveals and uncovers. In the end, we can only love if we first recognize Gods love in our lives. Our love tank must be filled up by God first and then distributed to those around us.
Prayer for today: Father God, I accept that You are love. Everything that I know or ever could have experienced comes from my relationship with You. Fill us with Your love in our hearts as we continue on this journey with You. Amen.
