Look Up
I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! Psalm 121:1-2
We all need help at times in life. It’s good to have a support system in place, but we need to look further than that. Because history and experience teach us that no safety plan, no insurance policy, no security system can keep you absolutely safe in this life. You can follow all the safety rules, take every precaution, exercise and eat well, and things can still go wrong. And that’s why we need to look to God for our help.
As I was reading Psalm 121 this month I was deeply impacted by two words–look up. In the New King James Version the Psalmist starts with a question: ‘I will lift up my eyes to the hills – from whence comes my help?’ (verse 1). However, when I read it in the New Living Translation it reads: ‘I look up’. That really is a good starting point. No matter what our circumstances are, even if they seem insurmountable and impossible, look up. ‘My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth’ (verse 2).”
Often we find ourselves wanting to look down. The weight of this world, the heaviness of sin causes our minds to seem heavy. But if we only rely on the strength of the Lord we can look up. When you look up, you will understand Gods dominion over all creation over all things and find strength to keep moving on.
To look up is lifting your eyes to the hills to be reassured that God is all-powerful and in control. In the words of a song, “He’s got the whole world in his hands.” It’s not a question, but a statement of fact.
Prayer for today: O God, I thank You today that I can look up! Look to You who holds this whole world in place and as such are holding me together. I rely on Your strength today signing praises unto Your name. Amen.
