Lessons from a Seed: Time
For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. Hebrews 10:36
In the many years of living on this earth we are told to ‘trust the process’. Now as an adult I understand that time is the essential element to everything in this life. Likewise, time is crucial in the germination process. There are seeds that will germinate in less than five days, while others will take five months—or even longer!
As in every business, it is usually better to get things done sooner rather than later—yet, some things cannot be hurried because they need to be done right. In our walk with Christ, we need to remember that it takes time to grow, change and overcome. This means that we should strive to be patient with our spiritual development, as God is patient toward us (James 1:2-4).
As mentioned earlier this week, a seed with a thicker coat may need to be scarred or cracked to ensure germination. In addition, some seed embryos are not fully developed for germination. In such cases, the seed needs to go through a waiting or curing period before it is ready.
Some seeds must be exposed to complete darkness for a selected time in order for germination to occur. Likewise, we sometimes go through periods of darkness—when life seems bleak and all hope has faded. This has occurred to some of God’s greatest servants, including Job, Joseph and David.
Seeds need time to germinate and grow. This process requires patience and endurance. Similarly, spiritual growth takes time and persistence. We often want immediate results, but God’s timing is perfect. He works in us through seasons, developing our character and faith. By trusting in God’s timing and remaining faithful, we allow Him to complete the good work He has begun in us. Embrace the process and be patient, knowing that God is at work in you.
Prayer for today: Lord, teach me to be patient in the process of spiritual growth. Help me to trust Your timing and remain faithful in all circumstances. Strengthen my endurance and help me to persevere, knowing that You are at work in my life. Complete the good work You have begun in me. Amen.
