Lessons from a Seed: Sunlight
Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life’. John 8:12
Seeds come in different shapes and sizes, with each type having different requirements for germination (the process in which seeds sprout and begin to grow). However, in general there are five basic physical conditions that all seeds need to germinate—sunlight, water, soil, time and temperature. Similarly, the follower of Christ needs these five spiritual conditions to grow. Each day this week we will look at how and why a seed needs each of these conditions—and how they spiritually apply to the believer’s life.
Sunlight, which changes in length and intensity throughout the year, is a plant’s signal to start germinating at the right time. It also helps show the plant which way is up and where to send its leaves to receive light, so that it can produce its own food.
Notice what Psalm 119:105 states: “Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” God, in His Word, shows us through daily Bible study which way to go.
Jeremiah 10:23 tells us alone man does not know how to direct his own steps. As a result, we grope in the darkness of this world, ignorant of the only way that produces true and lasting peace, happiness and prosperity. The light of God’s Word reveals the path that leads to the kingdom of God and eternal life.
Just as seeds need light to germinate and grow, Christians need the light of Christ to thrive spiritually. Light provides energy for the seed, triggering the growth process. Similarly, the light of Jesus provides us with the spiritual energy and guidance we need to navigate life. When we walk in the light of Christ, we are kept from spiritual darkness and guided towards the truth. By spending time in God’s Word and in prayer, we allow His light to shine upon our hearts, helping us grow in our faith and understanding.
Prayer for today: Light of the World, thank You for showing us the way. Help me to walk in Your light every day, to seek Your guidance, and to grow in my faith. Illuminate my path and keep me from the darkness of sin and confusion. Amen.
