Jacob – From Deceiver to Israel
So Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. Genesis 32:24, NKJV
In the Book of Genesis 27, Jacob’s flaw was deception. Jacob’s name means deceiver. Jacob was a deceitful son in a deceitful family who decided that obtaining his father’s blessing at all costs was more important than integrity. He manipulated his brother Esau out of his birthright and tricked his father Isaac for the blessing.
His mess was broken relationships and years of running.
But in Genesis 32, on the night before facing Esau again, Jacob wrestled with God. He refused to let go without a blessing. That night, God changed his name to Israel “one who struggles with God and prevails.”
Jacob walked away with a limp, but also with a new identity. Purpose sometimes comes through wrestling. You will make it to the other side with God on your side. God will confront your character before He confirms your calling.
Your past name does not have to be your permanent identity.
Prayer for today: Lord, I surrender the parts of me that manipulate, control, or strive in my own strength. Wrestle with my heart until You change me. Give me a new identity rooted in You. Even if I walk with a limp, let it remind me that I encountered You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
