He Shall Cover, Part II
He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. Psalm 91:4
Psalm 91:4 emphasizes the Lord’s faithfulness to those who trust in Him. The word “shield” refers to a larger item which covers much of a soldier’s body. This is a common part of ancient armor (Ephesians 6:16). I’ve discovered that a “buckler” is a small shield, often worn on the forearm. Whether the psalmist is repeating the concept of a mobile shield, or using different ideas for protection, the meaning is the same. God shall cover, protect, and care for His children.
It is God’s faithfulness to His promises that is our shield. God remains the same yesterday, today and forever more. This means God will be faithful to the promises He has made. The enemy tries daily to minimize the truth of God’s love by whispering lies, implanting fear, or condemning thoughts in our mind, but we can ward off his attack by remaining strong because God is on our side.
This week, if you slip and fall, do not stay down. Get up, repent and get back under that shield of protection. Thankfully this verse says it is His faithfulness, not ours, that is our shield.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unshakable faithfulness. Your shield is a metal which cannot be made with human hands. My faith is strong because I know You are faithful. Your faithfulness is my shield. In the name of Jesus. Amen
