He Shall Cover
He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. Psalm 91:4
If I ask you to think of a flying bird, what comes to mind? Did you picture an eagle or a chicken? I’ve never seen a chicken pictured in flight—many eagles, but no chickens. I’ve read this recently:
“We quote the Scripture from Isaiah 40:31 that talks about being borne up on the wings of eagles or with wings like eagles. There is a difference, however, between being “on” His wings and being “under” His wings.”
This promise in Psalm 91 verse 4 is not one of strength, it’s one of protection. The psalmist compares the Lord’s protection of those who trust in him to the protection a mother eagle gives her chicks. This is depicted as the mother spreading the feathers of her wings over them. When you picture the warmth of a nest and the security of being under the wings of the nurturing love of a mother hen with chicks, it paints a vivid picture of the sheltering wing of God’s protection that the psalmist refers to in this passage. Similarly, the Lord covers us with His wings.
God is deeply committed to protecting those who are His. May you find comfort in His protection.
Prayer for today: Lord, help my heart to be willing to run to You in faith every time trouble or danger presents itself. I find joy in knowing that You will cover me under Your wings, if I choose protection by You. May I choose to seek the refuge that You have made available to me. In the name of Jesus. Amen
