Grasshoppers and Giants
So they spread a false report among the Israelites about the land they had explored. They said, “That land doesn’t even produce enough to feed the people who live there. Everyone we saw was very tall, truth. Numbers 13:32
To a small child, many things seem and actually are too big to handle. But children are not supposed to take on responsibilities beyond their years. In fact, parents are discouraged from exposing children too much too soon because the brain cannot handle certain synaptic connections or experiences too early in life. As they grow and develop emotionally and intellectually, we see them develop more skills and confidence.
This is the same for the believer. As we grow, our perspective on the world changes so that what once seemed beyond us, now no longer is such a challenge. And this growth strengthens us, it gives our faith muscle a flex.
In Numbers 13, the spies were crippled. They were looking with little faith. They hadn’t learned to see themselves through God’s eyes. They were His people, dearly loved and chosen out of the nations as His special possession to fulfil His special purpose. Faith in Him would bring victory. They could go and take the land, but they were crippled with fear and ended up the grasshoppers they feared they were, wandering in the desert for 40 years.
What do you see? Today’s verse encourages us – if you want to connect with God, whether in prayer or in worship – you have to do it through faith. You must see beyond what is present and look to God who is able.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, please help us to see You as the Source of life. Help us to not see situations and circumstances beyond You. Help us to overcome and see them from Your perspective! I ask You for all the help and courage I need to defeat the enemy that blinds me. I bring my fears to You today and I put my trust in your unfailing love. In my own strength I can do nothing, but in Your strength I can do all things. Thank you that Your strength is made perfect in my weakness. Amen.
