Grace After Failure
Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me? John 21:17
There are a few stories that illustrate grace more beautifully than Peter’s. Peter boldly declared that he would never abandon Jesus. He was confident in his devotion and certain of his loyalty. Yet when pressure came, Peter denied Jesus three times.
The failure was public.
The failure was painful.
The failure was undeniable.
Imagine the regret Peter carried after hearing the rooster crow. Imagine replaying those moments over and over in his mind. Imagine believing he had ruined everything. But like Joshua, like Abraham, the story did not end with Peter’s failure. After His resurrection, Jesus sought Peter out. Notice that Jesus did not begin with condemnation. He did not shame Peter. He did not remind him of every mistake. Instead, Jesus restored him.
Three times Peter denied Christ. Three times Jesus asked, “Do you love Me?” Then Jesus recommissioned him: “Feed My sheep.” The man who failed publicly became one of the greatest leaders of the early church. The man who denied Jesus became the preacher who proclaimed Jesus at Pentecost. The man who fell became a testimony of God’s restoring grace. This is the heart of the gospel.
God does not ignore our failures, but neither does He define us by them. Joshua failed to seek God’s counsel in chapter 9, but God still used him in chapter 10. Abraham doubted God’s timing, but God still fulfilled His promise. Peter denied Christ, but Jesus still restored his purpose. Your worst decision is not stronger than God’s grace. Your greatest failure is not greater than God’s mercy.
The same Savior who restored Peter is still restoring people today.
Prayer for today: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your restoring grace. Thank You that You do not abandon me when I fail. Thank You that my mistakes do not surprise You and my failures do not disqualify me from Your love. Help me receive Your forgiveness, walk in Your grace, and trust the future You still have for me. Restore what has been broken and strengthen my faith to follow You wholeheartedly. In Your precious name, Amen.
