Good Friday
The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 1 John 3:8
Why do they call it Good Friday? Considering the current pandemic affecting us all worldwide, is it still a good day? Yes!
On this day we remember Jesus as He was physically tortured. He died in agony and He suffered the pain of hell for you and me as He was forsaken by God because of our sin. These aren’t good conditions but the result for mankind makes it good for you and for me.
On this day our sins were placed on the shoulders of Jesus as He hung on the cross. Satan had failed. What a nightmare for the god of this world. Jesus was about to overcome death, and from that moment onwards anyone who would choose Jesus as their Savior, and come under the covering authority of the Son of God, would also escape the judgment of death. That makes it a good day!
Jesus, in our place, experienced the eternal punishment we deserved because of our unrighteousness. The debt we owed God, a debt which reached back to The Fall, was paid in full by Jesus — “It is finished”. So for us it truly is a Good Friday.
Today I encourage you to read the last few chapters of Matthew, which describes the events leading up to the crucifixion. As you read, reflect on the fact that Jesus chose the cross. Jesus chose the nails. He chose the mocking and the whipping and the humiliation. He chose separation from His heavenly Father for my sake and for yours. If that doesn’t cause a wave of gratefulness to well up from deep within you, I don’t know what will.
Prayer for today: Thank You, thank You, thank You Jesus! Thank You for enduring. Thank Your for dying so that I could be forgiven. Thank You for choosing the cross. Amen
