God’s Great Love
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:8
When we sit and think of it, God’s grace is more amazing than we seem to be able to grasp that it is. The thought that any fallen human being would be able to be loved by God is insane. Yet in Scripture this is why God, in love, sent his Son: “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:8). This is God’s great demonstration of love.
God demonstrates his love for us by Jesus doing the unthinkable for us. While we were weak, while we were ungodly, while we were still sinners. Those are the descriptions of us in this passage. Weak, ungodly sinners, rebels against God, having transgressed the law of God.
You see, there was and is no other way. His righteousness is given over to our account; sinners are welcomed into the presence of a holy God based on the perfect obedience of another. Christ is our hope, Christ is our rest, Christ is our peace. He perfectly fulfilled God’s requirement so that in our sin, weakness, and failure we would never again have to fear God’s anger. This is what grace does! This is what love looks like! God’s love for us is unconditional and unwavering. Despite our flaws and imperfections, He sent His Son to die for our sins, offering us redemption and reconciliation with Him.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, thank you for your unconditional love. Help me to fully grasp the depth of your love and to live each day in gratitude for your grace and mercy.
