Finding Peace in Trust
But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3
Fear is a universal human emotion. We all encounter moments in life when fear grips our hearts and clouds our minds. It’s in these moments that we yearn for a source of refuge and peace. In Psalm 56:3, we find a profound and comforting declaration from the psalmist David: “But when I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
David, the author of this psalm, faced numerous reasons for fear throughout his relatively short life. He courageously defended his sheep by defeating a bear, confronted the giant Goliath who sought to intimidate God’s people, and frequently found himself pursued by a king who sought his demise. Despite these daunting challenges, David consistently chose to place his faith in the God who had given him the courage and strength to overcome them. In our own lives, we encounter similar choices—whether to succumb to fear or to embrace faith.
Our life experiences can be likened to closets filled with memories and moments that evoke both fear and peace. These memories are like the garments we wear: sometimes heavy coats that isolate us from others, and at other times, lightweight jackets that make us feel as if we can soar.
My personal journey has taught me that fear has an isolating effect. It keeps us looking over our shoulder. It keeps me waiting, even looking for the worst. It paralyzes us, keeping us bound and preventing progress. When David declared his trust in God in the face of fear, he essentially expressed his confidence in finding hope, trust, and assistance in knowing the character of God and His limitless capabilities.
Faith, on the other hand, centers on the object of your faith, not the magnitude of your faith. Faith involves choosing to trust in something that may not always be empirically proven, regardless of circumstances. Faith in God beckons us to discover hope, expectation, comfort, peace, and rest in every situation. I encourage you to grasp onto faith right now, for it will set you free and enable you to move forward. Take a moment to explore the contents of your “closet,” your life experiences, and see what treasures of faith you can find within.
Prayer for today: Loving Father, we thank You for the hope that springs from our relationship with You. May we hold fast to this hope, knowing that You are the source of all promises. Help us to align our desires with Your will, and as we pray, grant us the patience to await Your perfect timing. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
