Eyes Like God’s
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
When Samuel was sent to anoint the next king of Israel, he looked at Eliab, David’s older brother, and assumed he was the obvious choice—strong, tall, and impressive. But God quickly corrected him. David, the youngest son who wasn’t even invited to the gathering, was God’s chosen one. Why? Because while people look at the outside, God looks at the heart.
This verse is a powerful reminder that God’s perspective is not like ours. He’s not swayed by appearances, status, or popularity. He sees the inner life—our motives, character, and potential.
The world may judge by talent, beauty, influence, or confidence, but God searches deeper. He sees the hidden faithfulness, the quiet obedience, the unseen potential that others might overlook—including in you.
And just as God calls us to trust His vision for our lives, He also calls us to look at others with grace, not with judgment. With love and compassion, not hatred. We may never fully see someone’s heart like He does, but we can slow down and ask Him to help us see beyond appearances. Let us be people who look not just with our eyes, but with our hearts.
Today ask yourself what if we chose to look past the surface—to see the image of God in everyone, regardless of how they look, speak, or seem?
Prayer for today: Lord, thank You for seeing what others often overlook. Help me to stop comparing myself to others and to trust that You created me with purpose and intention. Teach me to see people the way You do—not by their outward appearance, but by the heart You so deeply care about. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
