Depend on Him
I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me. John 15:5
I had grown up hearing that old saying, “God helps those who help themselves,” so I believed that God wanted us to be independent and self-reliant. Then I discovered that, not only is this phrase not in the Bible, but there is so much more to it than the literal translation. The song writer says ‘My hope is built on nothing else, than Jesus blood and righteousness….I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly trust in Jesus name’.
John 15:5 says, “without Me, you can do nothing”. The truth is we cannot do anything if we are not connected to God. God is pleased when we rely on Him and seek His help.
It’s an “I can’t, but God can” lifestyle.
With God, there is nothing which is too small or insignificant; there is no distinction between sacred and secular. God wants to be involved in every aspect of our lives, and He wants to help us reach our God-given potential. He also wants to ease our burdens and struggles.
God wants us to be dependent on Him. Depending on God brings peace, joy, and satisfaction. But trying to accomplish things outside of Him makes us weary, frustrated, and discouraged. This is where the enemy likes to keep us. In a place of independence, thinking we don’t need to ask God for help. He knows the more we depend on God, the more productive we will be.
Are you standing on the solid Rock today?
Prayer for today: Lord, forgive me when I try to do things on my own, remind me to ask for Your help. Thank You for the peace, joy, and success that will be mine as a result! Amen.
