Day and Night Protection
You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day. Psalm 91:5
Psalm 91 verses five and six, references plays on humanity’s natural fear of darkness, which is both emotional and if only considering the physical, quite practical. In the ancient world, there were no electric lights or city lamp posts. Some of the more potent dangers came by night, such as wild animals and even bandits. An enemy could hide under the cover of darkness before springing a surprise attack. Even today, nighttime seems to increase the frequency of crime. Robberies, burglaries, assaults, and murder occur more often during the night than during the day. Of course, there is now technology to combat this, but it does not take away from the fact that darkness is a very dangerous thing. Not saying that daytime does not pose an issue as well, for in the era of the Old Testament had its own dangers: sunlight allowed enemies to see targets clearly and shoot arrows at victims. So how can we keep from being afraid? By remembering God is on our side.
Proverbs 3 verse 5 and 6 says ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.’ This clarifies that we must seek the Lord as we walk and allow Him to direct our paths. God does not promise His people invincibility instead, the best protection we can hope for begins with the stable, powerful protection offered by being close to God and His truth.
