David’s Dance
So David and all the people of Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and the blowing of rams’ horns. 2 Samuel 6:15
A defining trait of David’s life was his passion & hunger for God! He lives his life as a worshipper. This is depicted so clearly in 2 Samuel 6:12-22. When David brought back the Ark of the Covenant (a holy golden chest that was a symbol of God’s presence) to Jerusalem after being taken, David led the people in celebrating this big spiritual moment.
In verses 13 through 15 it says “After the men who were carrying the Ark of the Lord had gone six steps, David sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. And David danced before the Lord with all his might, wearing a priestly garment. So David and all the people of Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and the blowing of rams’ horns.”
During a time of worship, it is recorded that David “was dancing before the Lord with all his might.” If such an occurrence took place in many churches today, David might have been regarded with a mixture of curiosity and bewilderment. Even David’s own wife felt embarrassed and scorned him for his exuberant display of worship. However, David remained unperturbed by these reactions.
On that day, David worshiped God wholeheartedly, in both spirit and truth. He prioritized honoring God in his worship over concern for people’s opinions. When his wife confronted him, he responded, saying, “…I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes.”
How incredible it is to engage in worship in such a manner—unreservedly, without limitations, and with a complete disregard for worldly judgments. Our sole focus becomes offering sincere and heartfelt worship to the One who deserves everything we have to give.
Have you ever encountered this type of worship and gratitude? What prevents you from expressing your faith and worship in such a way? Can you worship publicly with this level of abandon? Do you worship Him with such passion and devotion in private?
May the Lord bless us all with the faith and heart to be able to dance as David danced!
