Command it
Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Psalm 103:1
Donald Lawrence sings a famous song titled ‘Encourage Yourself’. In the lyrics Lawrence sings about the necessity of speaking life into your own situation even during the most discouraging times. Instead of complaining and giving into feelings of defeat, depression, and disillusionment, you’ve got to learn to speak over yourself. In Psalm 103 David is calling upon his soul to praise God, in spite of the heavy burdens he’s carrying. He’s telling himself, “I will praise the Lord, regardless of my circumstances”.
There will inevitably be times when you’ll be going through uncomfortable and trying situations. And if you don’t begin speaking God’s word over your life, you’ll feel drained, depleted, and distressed. I know this to be true in my own life.
That’s why, when hard times arise, I run to the Lord. I begin reading His word, which leads me into praying His word and accepting His will. And although I’m not always sure about how He’ll work everything out for me, by speaking His word, my faith is built up and my outlook is changed. In these moments I remind myself that ‘it’s all good’ although it may not feel good, God makes it good (Romans 8:28). Not only that; I also release His word to work for me, by confessing it with my mouth and believing it in my heart.
Today I want to encourage you to stop speaking words of defeat. Begin saying what God says about you… start seeing as He sees. Where you are right now is no indication of where you will be in the future. So don’t get hung up on what’s not going your way at this very moment. Meditate instead on all that God is. As your words change, so too will your outcome.
