Can You Hear it?
Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.” 1 Kings 18:41
In 1 Kings 18, Elijah is a wanted man. Ahab accused Elijah of having caused Israel’s troubles, most likely because it had not rained in nearly three years. But Elijah being empowered by the spirit of God told Ahab that the real cause of Israel’s troubles was because of their disobedience. In verses 15-40 Elijah assures Obadiah that he will meet with prophets of Baal and challenges them on Mount Carmel. Following this victory Elijah tells Ahab to listen for there is an abundance of rain.
When Elijah told Ahab that there was a sound of abundance of rain, there had as yet been no sound audible to the human ear. Elijah had only heard this sound through the ears of faith. 1 Kings 18 records two prayers that Elijah prayed: one was in public when he prayed that God would show up for fire (verses 36-37), and the other was in private when Elijah went on his knees for water (verses 42-46).
Elijah believed without a doubt that God who has empowered him thus far was not about to leave him hanging. Elijah heard the sound even before it was visible in his sight. In Neuroscience we know that sound is processed faster than sight. But we do not need a textbook to understand this, God’s Word has already told us so.
Today, can you hear it? Can you hear your abundance breaking through?
