Be filled
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6
Plenty of American cities pride themselves on their fine food and drink. If you want the best pizza, Chicago is the place to go. Interested in a good bagel, there is nothing like those found in New York City. Craving something slow cooked and barbequed, then visit Texas. Looking for a Cajun cuisine look no further than New Orleans, Louisiana a city founded by the French, ruled for 40 years by the Spanish — and nearly washed away a decade ago by Hurricane Katrina. When our body needs energy, we eat food. But when our soul needs hope, what do we feed it? Yes you can get your belly full traveling all around America but there is nothing compared to sitting down at the kitchen table and being fed by the Word of God.
Whenever you sit down and open your Bible, you’re feasting on something that is “more… desired… than gold… sweeter… than honey” (Psalm 19:10). You are chewing and digesting on something that will sustain the spirit and not just the flesh. The prophet Jeremiah said, “When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.” (Jeremiah 15:16, emphasis added).
Followers of Christ should have a healthy appetite for the Word of God. When people lose their appetites, we worry about them. Likewise, if you lose your appetite for God’s Word, you should be concerned. Hungering for spiritual food leads to growth, growth leads to godliness, where your hope is built—and that’s not expensive. It’s priceless.
