Amazing Grace

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. Ephesians 2:8

One of the most beloved hymns of all time is “Amazing Grace.” Written by John Newton, a former slave trader turned minister, this hymn is a powerful testament to the transforming power of God’s grace. For generations, these simple words have comforted the broken, encouraged the weary, and reminded believers of one incredible truth: God’s grace changes everything.

“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see.”

What makes grace so amazing isn’t simply that it forgives us; it forgives us when we least deserve it. Think about that for a moment. We spend so much of our lives trying to earn acceptance. We work to prove ourselves at school, at work, even in relationships. We often think if we can just do enough good, God will love us a little more.

But grace doesn’t work that way.

Grace cannot be earned.

Grace cannot be purchased.

Grace cannot be repaid.

When we sing “Amazing Grace,” we are reminded of the incredible mercy that God extends to us every day. Oh, how amazing it is knowing that we were once all lost and wretched, only to be found and given a new life. Grace is God’s undeserved favor poured out on undeserving people.

Prayer for today: Gracious God, thank You for Your amazing grace that saves us and sets us free. As we sing this hymn, let us be ever mindful of the depth of Your love and the power of Your redemption. Fill our hearts with gratitude and joy as we lift our voices in praise to You.  Amen
