A Runner’s Diet
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 1 Corinthians 9:24
An athlete takes on vigorous training in order to win the prize. But, an athlete also has an awareness of the right diet to enable maximum physical performance. As followers of Christ we too need to give similar attention to our spiritual diet, making sure that we feed on God’s word and everything that will build us up, avoiding anything that would weaken or defile us. Not only God’s word does the body good, we need to also sing praises to God. A good song in the morning or throughout the day is also good for the soul.
When Paul writes to Timothy, he again mentions athletes (2 Timothy 2:5), saying that they need to compete according to the rules. As Christians we need to live our lives according to the commands given to us by God. This is why it’s important for us to read His word so that we can grow in our relationship with God and apply His word to our life. There are many promises in scripture which tell us of the blessings that follow obedience.
As we continue to consider the achievements of the medal winners in the Olympics, perhaps we should take inspiration from them for our Christian lives and learn to run the race set before us with dedication and perseverance, keeping our focus totally on the Lord. Fueled by God’s word is the best way to run this race.
Prayer for today: Father God, please help me to remain focused on You at all times, making my relationship with You the priority for my life. I thank You so much for Your strength and willpower You have given me.. I want to be fueled by You so that I can withstand the darts of the enemy. Help me to lay aside everything that would distract me from You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
