A Natural Disaster
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future… will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38–39
When Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, it left behind widespread devastation. It was one of the most destructive storms in the island’s history. Months after the disaster, many people were still without electricity, clean water, or communication. Even years later, recovery continues.
Events like this remind us of a sobering reality: none of us are fully insulated from suffering. Natural disasters, illness, loss, and unexpected tragedy can touch any life. Wealth, stability, and possessions are never enough to guarantee safety.
So how do we live with confidence in an uncertain world?
Paul gives us the answer in Romans 8. He declares with certainty that nothing! Absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Not danger, not disaster, not suffering, and not even death itself. This does not mean storms will not come. It means we are never alone in them. When our security is rooted in Christ, fear loses its grip. Circumstances may shake our world, but they cannot shake God’s love for us. His presence holds us steady when everything else feels unstable. For those who belong to Christ, even in the darkest moments, there remains a deeper truth: we are loved, we are held, and we are not abandoned.
That is why, even in hardship, the believer can still say, “It is well with my soul.”
Prayer for today: Lord, thank You that nothing can separate me from Your love. When life feels uncertain or overwhelming, anchor my heart in Your presence. Help me to trust that You are with me in every storm, and that Your love will never fail. Amen.
