A Constant Watcher
He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Psalm 121:3
The word “keeper” in this psalm means someone who watches attentively—like a vigilant guard on duty. But unlike human protectors, God never blinks, never nods off, never gets distracted. He never misses a moment.
This is a bold contrast to the so-called gods we see elsewhere in Scripture. Remember Elijah on Mount Carmel in 1 Kings 18? He challenged the prophets of Baal to call down fire from heaven. While they shouted and cut themselves in desperation, Elijah taunted them: “Maybe your god is sleeping and needs to be awakened.” (1 Kings 18:27). The silence of Baal exposed a powerful truth: A god who sleeps when you need him isn’t much of a god.
But our God is different. He never slumbers. He never sleeps. That means we can trust Him to watch over us every second of every day. And because He is always awake so we don’t have to be.
Yes, the devil is busy. But God is still sovereign. And when we look to Him for our help, the enemy has to flee.
When you’re unsure of the next step—when you’re feeling unsteady—remember: God won’t let your foot slip. He keeps watch 24/7. Even if you stumble, He will hold you fast. His eye is on you even when you forget to look up to Him.
Prayer for today: Lord, thank You for being a faithful and tireless keeper. When I grow weary from worry, remind me that You are always watching—and that I don’t have to be. Teach me to rest in Your care. Amen
