Finding Purpose
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ. Ephesians 4:15
There are some things in this world that you just have to stop and wonder: Why did God create that? Mosquitos, for example. As summer is approaching many of us will soon think this one we could certainly live without. No one, at least to my knowledge, sits outdoors and feels the sting of these creatures then says, “Thank you, Jesus, for these bugs taking my blood.” Or how about termites. Why in the world did God create the termites? But here is a bigger question—the one I want to deal with today: why did God create you? There are people all over the world asking that question today. Is there a Creator and if so, why did he create me? What on earth am I here for?
You have probably heard of this book, The Purpose Driven Life. The author, Rick Warren, asks the question “What On Earth Am I Here For?” Deep down, each of us longs to know the answer. We long for purpose and mission. Some even have a “life verse” from the Bible that gives them a sense of living. While others live a lifetime trying to find the answer. The short answer is, creation is not about you. It’s not about you.
The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness. It’s far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambitions. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God. You were born by His purpose and form His purpose.
Our life can be seen as a 3-in-1. We are to live loved. To imitate God’s love. And to love others. To live a life that is loved. Before there is any grand vision for you to discover or great accomplishment to achieve, we are to receive God’s love. Then because we are His children, we are called to imitate God by being compassionate, forgiving and loving. Lastly, we are to love others. The love we received from God, we are to now offer to those around us. He is the Source of goodness but we are the earthen vessels that carry it.
So what are you here for? For God to receive all the glory for your life. You are called to the ministry of worship—7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. You’ve got one shot at this life. Give God everything you’ve got to the glory of God, you won’t be disappointed.
