Holding onto God
Then the man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” Genesis 32:26
Since his birth, there is one thing Jacob was good at, it was holding on and not letting go. At birth he grabbed his brother’s heels to be the firstborn, then he grabbed his brother’s blessings, later in life he held on to wait for Rachel, his beloved. And in today’s verse we find Jacob holding onto God.
The Bible says that after his hip went out in verse 26, the man said “Let me go, for it is day break. But Jacob replied, I will not let you go unless you bless me” I think you can safely assume that you’ve found yourself when you hold onto God when it would be easier to let go.
There are times for all of us today when we have a choice to be like Jacob, wrestling with God, persevering in pressing in to receive the inheritance that is ours in Christ, to live in the freedom and joy of being sons and daughters of the King, or to do the opposite and fight against Him. Regretfully there are too many times in my own life when I know I have fought against Him. My personal pride has risen up, ignoring my own weaknesses, relying on self, fighting against God and His way, and pushing to take control and handle things my own way. Until I have come to a place of repentance, realizing that God’s way was the best way after all.
Choose to press in and receive what God has in store for you. When you hold onto God even when you are hurting in your hip, you are determined to not just walk away with anything less than what God has in store for you. Jacob found himself in the moment when he held onto God even though he wasn’t even sure it was Him. Do you hear the drive in Jacob? We all need to be this way. There comes a time in life where we must decide, I want this bad enough. I am sick of faking it, sick of posing, I am sick of pretending. I am sick of trying on my own. God I am holding onto You and I will not let go. This is significant. I will NOT LET GO!
Determine like Jacob, I will not let go of God until He blesses me. Hold onto the One that is greater than Esau and do not let go.
