Lamp and Light
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105
A lamp and a light – what’s the difference? Aren’t both the same thing? No, it’s not. A lamp is a device for giving light. A light is like the streetlights that illuminate the whole road. Both together is a source of spiritual inspiration we need to keep us from stumbling. If you are going to move forward, to make your way without danger, and get to where you are meant to go, you need something to light your way. No passage gets at this need and God’s provision better than Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
God’s word is the lamp and light we need to see as we move forward on this journey. You need light to help you deal with the unexpected. You need light to cope with new difficulties that comes your way. You need light to deal with weaknesses of the body and hardships of the heart. You need light for those moments when you’re alone and overwhelmed. You need light for all those unknowns that will show up on your doorstep tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and for the rest of your life. As we make our way from one patch of light to the next, we still need the lamp to guide us through the darkness – but how wonderful it is to know that neither the lamp nor the light will fail.
Prayer for today: Thank You, Father, for putting in my hand a lamp and Your light that guides my steps. Amen.
