Daily Bread, Daily Trust
When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. Exodus 16:15
Do you think that Jesus had manna from Exodus 16 on his mind when preaching the Sermon on the Mount? “When you pray, here’s what I want you to pray: give us this day our daily bread. He did not ask for our weekly bread, our monthly allotment, enough for the next year, but for today. Manna came daily. Not weekly. Not in bulk. And if we’re honest, that’s where we struggle. Because we don’t just want provision, we want a preview. We don’t really believe that the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, and His mercies are new every morning, if we demand a blueprint of his grace ahead of time.
Today, I encourage you to lean in daily. Going ahead to tomorrow, three weeks from now, seven months from now, and ten years from now, and wondering what your kids are going to be like, what your marriage is going to be like, if you will get married, what is going to happen, if you get married what kind of job will your spouse have, will you get sick, if you get sick, how this illness is going to work out, etc. This cycle of worry is not healthy. Trust that God has given you bread and mercy for today. When you get to tomorrow (or a year from now on your wedding day), whatever trials or surprises are there, believe that God will give you some more manna for that day.
Prayer for today: Loving Father, Lord, teach me to trust You for today, not worry about tomorrow. Amen
