It Is Well
I praise you because you are to be feared; all you do is strange and wonderful. I know it with all my heart. Psalm 139:14
What do you do when you lose everything? How can you go on when it seems like life is falling apart? We live in a wonderful world, there is no doubt about that, but eventually like the Psalmist we will go through the valley of the shadow; there is no way to avoid it. However, what we can do is in these moments sing unto the Lord it is well and find peace as we look to Him. Consider the lyrics penned by Horatio G. Spafford. It says:
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul
It is well
With my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
These lyrics were penned when Spafford hit rock bottom after losing everything. Hard times can destroy us all causing the ship to sway. But, at the end of the day, it’s not about our faith; it’s about God’s faithfulness. Our lives are shaped by the pounding waves of life. Yet we remain unshakable because we are anchored to the One who has the ability to keep us. Now unto Him who is able to keep us from falling, to Him we sing it is well.
Psalm 139 and Romans 8 are not for the faint-hearted. They are tried and tested words of life. “If I ascend to the heights you are there. If I descend to the depths you are there also. If I cover myself with darkness, you are there, because with you, O God, darkness is as light.” Today may you be reminded God is our companion.
