Thanksgiving Day Devotional
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1Thessalonians 5:16-18
Today we gather around tables, with familiar faces and familiar foods, to celebrate Thanksgiving. But beyond the traditions and the moments of joy, today offers us something much deeper, an invitation to cultivate a posture of gratitude that lasts far beyond the holiday.
Gratitude is more than a feeling; it is a way of seeing. It shifts our hearts from what we lack to what God has already given. It directs our minds from worry to trust, from striving to resting in God’s goodness.
Scripture calls us into this posture: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
Not after everything is resolved. Not when life looks perfect. But in everything even the imperfect, the uncertain, and the incomplete.
In Luke 17 we read the account of The One Grateful Leper. Jesus healed ten lepers, but only one returned to give thanks. Ten received the miracle, but only one recognized the Giver. Ten walked away healed, but only one walked away whole.
The difference was gratitude.
This one man didn’t wait until life was perfect to be thankful. He didn’t wait for all questions to be answered or for every circumstance to align. He saw Jesus, he remembered mercy, and he returned with praise.
His gratitude stopped him in his tracks and brought him back to the feet of the Savior.
This story invites us to ask:
Do I notice what God has done for me?
Do I pause long enough to return thanks?
Do I let gratitude draw me closer to Jesus?
Prayer for today: Father, thank You for Your goodness, Your faithfulness, and Your unending mercy. Teach me to cultivate a posture of gratitude not just today, but every day. Open my eyes to see Your hand in the small things and the great things. Like the one who returned to Jesus, may my heart always come back to You with thanksgiving. Amen.
