Cheerleaders
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7
Psalm 20 wasn’t just any song, it was a battle cry, a call to arms, and a reminder of where true strength lies. This particular psalm would have been sung by the people of Israel right before David led his armies out to war. You might say this was Israel’s fight song, a song they would sing during their pep rally, a rallying cry to lift their spirits before heading into battle.
I’m sure many of you have attended a school pep rally before a big game. It’s held to get everyone excited, typically in the gymnasium with the band playing and cheerleaders pumping up the crowd. Some schools even have a fight song they sing before their team heads off to battle their rivals. This psalm served that same purpose for Israel. They gathered, they sang, they prayed, and they prepared to fight the battle before them.
Do you have cheerleaders in your life? People who you can turn to when you’re facing battles, people who understand that you are in a spiritual battle and are ready to stand with you in prayer? These people may not be the ones who can physically fight for you, but they can pray for you, encourage you, and remind you that God is fighting on your behalf.
In times of struggle, it’s vital to surround ourselves with a community who can pray for us, cheer us on, and remind us that the victory comes from trusting in the name of the Lord, not in our own strength. Just as Israel gathered at the tabernacle to offer sacrifices and cry out to God, we too can gather with those around us who will lift us up and point us back to the source of our strength—God.
Today, take a moment to thank God for those cheerleaders in your life. If you don’t have them, ask God to bring people who will walk with you in faith and prayer, especially when the battles seem too overwhelming. And remember, no matter how big or difficult the battle, victory is found when we trust in the name of the Lord.
Prayer for today: Lord, thank You for the community of people You’ve placed in my life who pray with me and for me. Help me to be a cheerleader for others, offering prayer and encouragement in their battles. Remind me that true strength comes from You alone, and in You, I have all I need to face whatever challenges lie ahead. Amen
