He Supported Me
They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the Lord supported me. Psalm 18:18
Think of a tomato plant, especially those tall, fruit-bearing varieties. Without support, their stems bend and break under the weight of their own fruit. Gardeners use stakes to hold them upright, protecting the plant from collapse, disease, and pests by keeping the fruit off the ground.
In the same way, we need the strong, steady support of our God. Life can grow heavy burdens of responsibility, spiritual battles, discouragement, and grief. If we try to carry these alone, we’ll eventually break. But when we’re staked to the strength of the Lord, we remain upright. We endure. We bear fruit.
David knew this well. During his time as a fugitive, running from King Saul, and in countless other battles, he learned to lean on the Lord, not his own strength. And the Lord honored that trust. David wrote, “In the day of my disaster… the Lord was my support.” Even on our worst days when disaster strikes, when friends disappear, when our strength is gone, God remains. He never walks away.
If we rely on our own wisdom or might to stand against the enemy of our souls, we will fall. But when we lean into the strength of our Deliverer, we will stand. His support is unshakable.
Prayer for today: Lord, thank You for being there even on the darkest days. You didn’t abandon me when I was at my lowest. Thank You for being my support when all else gave way. Whenever I am slipping, Lord, You support me. Amen.
