Pass On Mercy
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Matthew 5:7
We plead for God’s mercy when we fall short—when we make mistakes, act selfishly, or wound others. And in His kindness, God offers it freely. But what happens when someone else asks the same of us? Do we extend that same mercy, or do we clutch our hurt like a badge of honor? Today’s verse “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7) encourages us to show compassion and forgiveness to others, knowing that we too will be shown mercy by God.
The truth is, asking for mercy while withholding forgiveness puts us in dangerous spiritual territory. Jesus spoke clearly about this in the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:21–35). A man forgiven of a massive debt refused to forgive a minor debt owed to him. In the end, the mercy shown to him was revoked. It’s a sobering reminder that mercy is not just to be received—it’s meant to be passed on.
Prayer for today: Loving Father, I often ask for Your mercy, but I struggle to offer that same grace to others. Soften my heart. Remind me of how much I’ve been forgiven, and teach me to extend that forgiveness—even when it feels undeserved. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
