Junk Mail: What is right?
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8
The world we live in often presents a dangerous idea that each person can determine what is right for themselves, regardless of any objective standard. Isaiah reminds us of this truth: “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way” (Isaiah 53:6). Our natural tendency, as humans, is to define “right” according to our own feelings, desires, and circumstances. But this self-made idea of right and wrong is misleading and insufficient.
So, how do we discern what is right in the midst of this cultural confusion? The answer is found in Philippians 4:8. Paul instructs us to fix our thoughts on things that are true, honorable, pure, and most importantly, right. But how do we know what is right? We know by turning to the Word of God.
In a culture that often redefines right and wrong based on feelings or trends, it’s essential to continually return to the Bible for our moral compass. We must filter all messages through what is righteous and aligned with God’s will for our lives.
The Bible is our ultimate filter. It is the objective standard that helps us distinguish between what the world says is right and what God defines as right. While society may tell us that every man should do what seems right in his own eyes, God’s Word calls us to a higher standard. The truth of Scripture helps us filter through the “junk mail” of the world’s wisdom and reject messages that distort what is truly right.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Help me to filter my thoughts through the lens of Your truth and wisdom. Teach me to recognize the difference between the world’s idea of what is right and the righteousness that comes from You. Guide me to live in a way that is pleasing to You and reflective of Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
