Junk Mail
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8
I don’t know about you, but I get a lot of mail, and don’t even get me started on the endless emails or spam phone calls! But before we decide whether or not to respond, one of the first things we do is look at who the message is coming from. We don’t just toss the letter without opening it, and we don’t answer a call without checking the caller ID. We take a moment to discern the source.
Likewise, in life, there is so much noise all around. Many updates, the never endings do this or don’t do that. However, as followers of Christ we shouldn’t just accept every message that comes our way. We need to be discerning about what we take in and what we allow to influence us. Our thoughts and hearts are just like our mailboxes—they need to be protected and filled with messages that are meaningful and trustworthy.
Philippians 4:8 tells us, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
In the same way we check the return address or caller ID, we can check the messages we receive by filtering them through God’s Word. If a message aligns with the truth of Scripture, we know it’s one we can trust—it’s from Jesus. That is the kind of message we should embrace.
So, stop reading the “junk mail” that gets delivered to you daily—the negativity, the lies, the distractions. Instead, filter everything through the Word of God. Let His truth be the lens through which you view all things, and choose to focus on what is true, honorable, pure, and worthy of praise.
Prayer for today: Lord, thank You for the promise of fruitfulness when I remain in You. May my life bear much fruit that brings glory to You. Amen.
