Spiritual Armor: The Sword of the Spirit ⚔
Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17
The sword used to be the most common weapon for battle. It was both used to defend and attack. Going out into battle without a sword would be useless. The same is true for the believer. Ephesians 6:17 says, “…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God“. In this verse, the word of God is described as a sword that can be used to defeat enemies during spiritual attacks. Those who are in Christ have the Sword of the Spirit. This means that the sword we wield is given to us by the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit.
God doesn’t want us to fashion our own swords, instead He instructs us to use His word.
In Matthew, we find Jesus telling Peter to put his sword away. If he takes up his sword, he will perish by the sword of his enemy. By saying the Sword of the Spirit, he tells us that the Sword we wield is a spiritual sword. It’s not a word we use to force people into believing what is true. It is a sword of truth and wisdom from the word of God.
We might roll our eyes, thinking that words cannot defeat anything. What we need is something powerful and able to blow people up. Remember who we are fighting. But if we truly understand the battle that we are in and the leader at the forefront then we will come to accept there is only one sword capable of defeating the enemy of our soul. The Word of God is our offensive weapon. It is alive and active, capable of cutting through the lies of the enemy.
So it is up to us to choose the word of God as our weapon. His words can cut down all who are stubborn and rebellious.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me Your word. teach me to wield the sword of Your Spirit effectively. Let Your Word be my weapon in every spiritual battle. Amen
