The Junk Cabinet
But if we confess our sins to God, he will keep his promise and do what is right: he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing. I John 1:9
Yesterday we talked about the junk draw, but it doesn’t end there for me. I also have a junk cabinet, one that is filled with mismatched plastic containers—some without lids, some too small, others just taking up space. Recently, while searching for a specific container, I had to empty the entire drawer to find what I was looking for. And there it was—right in front of me, buried under a mess of items I didn’t really need.
In that moment, I realized how similar this is to our walk with Christ. Sometimes, God calls us to a place where He wants us to “empty out” certain areas of our lives. He wants us to remove, delete, or let go of the things that clutter our hearts and minds. These might be habits, thoughts, relationships, or distractions that keep us from seeing the bigger picture of what He’s doing.
What we need to grow and move forward in faith is often already within reach, but it’s buried beneath the unnecessary things we hold onto. Just like tossing out that old container without a lid, God invites us to clear out what no longer serves a purpose in our spiritual life. Sure, we could cover things up—like wrapping a container in foil—but why not let go and trust God to provide what fits perfectly?
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father weed out the junk so that we can focus on Jesus. Amen.
